#SaveYourInternet - YouTube asks creators to speak up

In its latest update, titled "A Final Update on Our Priorities for 2018", YouTube is asking for creators to speak up and share their opinion about the copyright directive that will affect the livelihood and ability or creators to share their voice with the world.

If implemented as proposed, Article 13 threatens hundreds of thousands of jobs, European creators, businesses, artists and everyone they employ. The proposal could force platforms, like YouTube, to allow only content from a small number of large companies.

In practice, it could force platforms to prioritize content only from a small number of large companies that can stand behind their copyright clearance programs. It would be too risky for sites to host content from smaller original content creators, because the sites would now be directly liable for that content.

YouTube asks creators to learn more about this topic, using this page they created, which already features the opinion of some creators, as well as to take immediate action to voice their opinions on social media (#SaveYourInternet). More specifically, YouTube asks for the following:

  • Create a video about Article 13 using #SaveYourInternet.
  • Follow @YouTube on social — we’ll share more updates and information on Article 13 in the coming weeks.
  • Let your representatives know your position on Article 13.

The European Parliament will vote on a final approval regarding the Copyright Directive in January 2019.
