Mid-rolls auto-enabled on July 27 2020

Starting July 27 2020, YouTube will enable mid-roll ads on all videos that are longer than 8 minutes. This means that both new and old videos that are eligible will automatically have these ads enabled. Previously, only videos that had over 10 minutes were eligible to have mid-roll ads. According to YouTube, user studies indicate that automatically placed mid-roll ads are two times less interruptive than manually placed mid-roll ads. However, these mid-roll ads may have a negative effect, resulting for example in decreased viewership of the videos.

If you think that these ads are not a good fit for your videos, follow these steps to disable them:
  1. Go to your YouTube Studio.

  2. Click on your monetization page.

  3. In the note that shows up mid page, click the "Actions" option at the right and then select "Open preferences".

  4. Select the option "I will individually review and enable mid-rolls on new uploads and existing videos." Select a reason, and finally finish by clicking "Save" at the bottom right corner.
