If you love movies and you pay close attention to details to create your own opinion about the movie, and you like to share your thoughts with your audience but you don't know where to start, we have some tips for you.
Pick a movie, watch it several times, contemplate
You know when you watch the same movie and you start to notice some additional details that somehow you didn't notice the first time? That happens a lot. Watching the movie several times will make you more aware of things like inconsistencies, the genius in the process of creating and telling the story of the film, how they line up their shots, the choice of cinematography, the acting, how the scenes connect with each other, and much more.
Be specific and objective
There needs to be a balance between your personal opinion, how the movie makes you feel, and the facts and how you articulate everything when sharing your thoughts with the public. You have to be thorough and objective, this will give you more credibility. Be descriptive (without leading to spoilers) on the things that mattered to you.
Start with the premise
Get some background by researching about the premise of the movie. Many movies are created with an idea or objective in mind, other than entertaining an audience. That information can provide meaningful hints on why certain developments happen in a certain way in the movie. The premise will give you a better understand the character's mental and physical conditions, why they act in a certain way, which will lead you to have more context to share with your audience. You should also make sure to keep a balance between what you found as a positive aspect versus what you found as being negative in the movie. Chances are that you want to talk about movies that are for a wide range of audiences, and these generally include both good and bad aspects. It's up to you to find a balance between those two.
Talk about the characters
Characters are at the core of a movie, without them there will be no movie, no story, and basically, no point in making a movie, so make sure you dedicate time to talk about them. Here are some of the things you should consider:
- Pick a character and why is he/she relevant to the story
- What is his/her character development
- How did he/she contributed to the whole movie
Talking about these will help make sense of the plot and how they interact with other characters.
Is the story predictable? Did it go full circle?
No movie is created without a story, so you can't skip talking about this. Usually the best thing to do is a summary (again, without spoilers) so that you fans can understand the sequence of events, and then provide insights on what you liked and not liked about the story and if you think it went full circle or if it fell off at a certain point.
Visual presentation
Movies can also touch on sensitive topics, such as depression, mental ilnesses, and more. As a critic, you will also need to review how those topics where portrayed in the movie and if the movie achieve a good representation of the topic visually. In this case, use facts and be descriptive, you can even mention other literature information to back up your opinion.
