Finding your Audience (Niche)

Finding your Audience (Niche)

When you start a channel, it may not be obvious what your niche will be, as you usually start of with a few ideas and you are not quite certain what your target audience is. In fact, many creators take a long time to find what this. Hopefully, these tips can help you.

Going back to the basics, if you don't know what the word niche mean, it means a point of focus or concentration. If you notice, top creators on YouTube today have a core focus on a specific topic and build up their channels to make them unique within their specific areas, as they understand that consistency is a very important component to develop an audience. Successful content creators know their audiences and how to create content that their viewers want to see, that is why having a niche is so important.

Select a general topic
First thing to do is to select a general topic and focus on an area of your interest, whether that is related to gaming, beauty, education, you name it. Once you have decided on the topic, it will be more clear what kind of content you can create for your channel, and what kind of audience you want to atract to your channel, so you can start building up your community, which will in turn help your channel grow.

Narrow down your niche
Doing this is important because you will be able to reach out to an audience that have the same interests as you, so it will be easier to develop a relationship with people with the same mindset. For example, if you want to create a dog training channel, specifically about training Siberian Huskies between ages X and Y, people that are specifically looking for this kind of content will be more susceptible to watching your videos because your interests and theirs are in line.

Be different, be You
There are a lot of content creators on YouTube, creating content like yours. The most successful ones are those that have used their personalities and strengths. If you are a funny person, put humor in your videos. If you are a more factual person, consider adding facts in your topics to make them more informative. It all boils down to what you are good at and how you can use it in your content. If you are not sure, think about it and make a list of things you are good at and what makes you unique, and come up with ideas that complement your personality and strengths for your videos.

Create videos you enjoy
Let's say that you have found your niche in makeup videos, and while you are good at creating that type of content and your audience responds well to you, in the back of your mind you can't help but feel that you would like to create gaming videos, which you enjoy much more. Chances are that if you continue doing the makeup videos you will burnout and you will feel that you can't go on creating that type of content, because you don't honestly enjoy it. Make sure you create content that makes you happy as it will flow more naturally and you will not feel that creating content is a burden that you must carry on.

Be consistent with your content and have an upload schedule
If you have built a community on your niche, you have to take care of them and be consistent with your content so that your subscribers can continue to support you and watch your content. You can set your audience's expectations by sharing your schedule with them. YouTube is a very competitive platform, so unless you are able to stand out from the crowd, if your upload schedule is irregular, or you take too long to upload new content, it's likely that some of your fans will move on to find other channels to watch the content they are looking for. Consistency is a key element of keeping your audience attention on YouTube.
